Antiquary Mr. Somerton deciphers a cipher hidden in stained glass from Steinfeld Abbey that points to treasure sealed in a well. He opens a slab marked with "seven eyes" and finds not only moneybags but a loathsome guardian. Saved by his valet, he later reseals the stone, convinced the thing prowls only in darkness.
